Approximately half of the mineral truck parking capacity at Mozambique’s KM4 terminal has been temporarily closed for rehabilitation, modernisation and paving, potentially adding to congestion along the N4-Maputo corridor.
The restriction took effect on October 10 and is expected to last four months, according to the latest Cargo Movement Update compiled by the Southern African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) and distributed by BUSA.
SAAFF warns that the reduction in truck staging capacity could exacerbate congestion along the corridor.
The terminal at Ressano Garcia is operated by Gestão de Terminais de Serviços Aduaneiros. Mozambique’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics announced a 10-year extension of its concession in November 2025, accompanied by an infrastructure and technology investment programme.
Planned improvements include widening the terminal’s entrance and exit roads to three lanes, constructing a new exit towards the N4 and introducing automated control processes. Four additional fast lanes for transit cargo are also part of the programme.
Freight News reported in August on the launch of the broader Ressano Garcia border modernisation project, which includes upgrades to KM4 and express lanes for mineral trucks travelling towards the Port of Maputo.
