Seven Tshwane bridges undergo rehabilitation

Rehabilitation work has begun on seven bridges along provincial roads in and around Tshwane with temporary traffic management measures possible during construction.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport says the project will restore the condition of the structures and support the reliability of routes used by businesses, freight operators and commuters.

The project includes two bridges on the R101 over the Hennops River, three on the R511 southwest of Atteridgeville and one on the R514, also known as Van der Hoff Road, northwest of Tshwane. A seventh structure is on the D775 gravel road southwest of Atteridgeville.

Work will include repairs to bridge rails and parapets, replacement of bridge joints, crack sealing and repairs to damaged concrete.

Selected bridges and road approaches will also be widened. Other interventions include resurfacing bridge decks and approaches, improving guardrails and constructing pavement layers where required.

“Bridges are vital links within our road network and their deterioration can affect mobility, safety and economic activity,” Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said.

The department urged road users to exercise caution around construction sites where temporary traffic management measures may be implemented.
