Mozambique has broken ground on a 980-million-metical (about R260m) modernisation of the Ressano Garcia border post, including upgrades intended to improve truck movements along the Maputo Corridor.
The project includes modernisation of the KM4 road-freight terminal, additional access roads and express lanes for mineral trucks moving towards the Port of Maputo.
Ressano Garcia, located in Moamba District in Maputo Province, is the main Mozambican border crossing on the corridor linking South Africa with the port.
The project was launched on August 17 and includes about 450m meticais (R120m) for the construction and modernisation of the Ressano Garcia tourist terminal, according to 360 Mozambique.
A one-stop border model will allow travellers to complete South African and Mozambican entry and exit procedures at a single facility.
Fernando Ouana, national director of logistics and private-sector development at Mozambique’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics, said officials from both countries would process travellers sequentially in the same building, eliminating the need to complete separate procedures on each side of the border.
Although the one-stop processing arrangements focus primarily on travellers, the broader project includes freight infrastructure intended to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on the EN4.
The entrance and exit roads serving the freight terminal will be widened to three lanes, while a new exit connecting the terminal with the N4 will be constructed.
Four express lanes are also planned for trucks transporting minerals to the Port of Maputo. The freight terminal will be upgraded to improve the reception, sorting, parking and movement of heavy vehicles.
