Mediterranean Shipping Company subsidiary, Medlog, has acquired the UK-based logistics operator Maritime Group, following finalisation of negotiations on Monday.

The acquisition marks a significant milestone for Maritime, one of the UK's leading logistics providers, as it advances its development plans, an official announcement from the company said.

Employing approximately 3 000 staff across a state-of-the-art network of 41 sites, the company offers a comprehensive range of supply-chain services, including integrated road and rail freight logistics, container transport, storage, domestic distribution, freight management, and truck sales.

John Williams, executive chairman of Maritime Group, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating: "We are very pleased to have secured the long-term future of the business as part of an independent, global logistics organisation capable of providing the continued investment to support our exciting plans for developing the company for all our stakeholders."

He highlighted the shared heritage and values between Maritime and Medlog, emphasising their commitment to employees, customers, and suppliers.

Williams added that Maritime would continue to focus on developing technology-driven, infrastructure-led supply-chain solutions.

The company has plans to enhance service performance in the UK, including the introduction of new battery-electric trucks and the operation of rail terminals on an open access basis for both existing and new customers.

Medlog chair, Giuseppe Prudente, said: "We are delighted to be expanding our logistics footprint in the United Kingdom.

“The wealth of knowledge within Maritime, combined with Medlog's investment and expertise, will drive continued innovation in the UK's logistics infrastructure while respecting our environmental values."

The current management team of Maritime will remain in place, continuing to operate under the Maritime brand with the support of Medlog's investment.

The acquisition is part of a growing trend of overseas investments in UK logistics firms, following similar transactions involving other British companies in recent months.
