DHL Express launches 3-tonne service for heavyweight cargo

DHL Express has expanded its heavyweight cargo offering with a new service for time-critical shipments of up to 3 000 kg.

The Heavy Weight Express service covers individual pieces of up to 1 000 kg and total shipment weights of up to 3 000 kg. It forms part of DHL Express’s Time Definite International portfolio, which handles cross-border shipments delivered within defined transit times through the company’s express air and ground network.

The service would operate across more than 220 countries, including South Africa, using DHL’s aviation, ground, gateway, customs and last-mile network to provide single-carrier control from pick-up to delivery, the company said.

“These use cases are especially prominent in the technology sector, automotive manufacturing, engineering and machinery, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, and the oil and gas and energy sectors – industries where even small delays can result in severe financial impacts,” DHL said.

The service is also intended to reduce shippers’ dependence on fluctuating airline capacity and remove cost variability linked to add-on fees and handling surcharges.

“As industries face rising volatility, increasingly complex production cycles and significant financial exposure from delays and supply chain disruption, DHL’s ability to offer express-level speed, access to capacity and higher reliability for shipments up to 3 000 kg fundamentally changes the service levels that customers can expect from their logistics provider,” said DHL Express CEO, John Pearson.

The service will be supported by dedicated Heavy Weight Priority Desks.
