US landside infrastructure needs multi-billion upgrade

Quoting a report from the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), Port Technology said that the equivalent of R345.9 billion is required to develop the ports’ landside transport infrastructure to handle the projected heavy volume of freight over the next decade.

Upgrades are needed on roads, rail lines, bridges and tunnel links, the report added.

The AAPA said that US cargo transit is being restructured, with mega-ships “already wreaking congestion-related havoc” on the West Coast. Also it noted that the expansion of the Panama Canal is threatening much larger ships and cargo volumes for other areas of the country.

To meet all this, the US ports themselves have been investing large amounts on the deepening and redevelopment to meet the expected flood of cargo.

According to Engineering News Record, the breakdown of port landside investment requirements is: North Pacific ports R82.8bn; South Pacific ports R78bn; North Atlantic ports R76.8bn; South Atlantic ports R55.2bn; Gulf ports R49.2bn; and Great Lakes ports R3.9bn.
