ITC and dtic partner to support SA exporters

South African small and medium-sized enterprises will be the focus of expanded export development support under an agreement between the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic).

The memorandum of understanding establishes a framework for cooperation through 2030, covering export readiness, training, advisory services and access to market intelligence.

The partnership will support efforts to diversify South Africa’s export markets and help smaller businesses pursue opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“South African small businesses have the talent and entrepreneurial drive to strengthen their presence in regional and global markets,” said ITC executive director Pamela Coke-Hamilton.

“Through this partnership, we will work with the dtic to equip small businesses with the tools, knowledge and connections they need to compete internationally, create jobs and contribute to sustainable economic growth.”

Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Zuko Godlimpi said export development extended beyond selling more goods abroad.

“It is about building productive capacity, supporting value-added manufacturing, creating jobs and enabling more South African businesses to participate in regional and global value chains. This is central to our export strategy and our industrial development strategy.”

The partnership would strengthen practical support for emerging exporters, including township enterprises, rural producers, women-owned businesses and young entrepreneurs, he said.

The collaboration will give businesses access to ITC’s digital platforms, international networks and market intelligence tools, including the Global Trade Helpdesk, to identify export opportunities and navigate international markets.

It will also focus on strengthening trade support institutions, encouraging responsible business practices and developing regional value chains across Africa.

Cooperation will draw on existing programmes and opportunities to raise additional resources jointly.
