Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has invited proposals for the development and operation of a small to medium-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in the Port of East London.
The successful bidder will design, finance, develop, construct, operate and maintain the terminal under a 25-year concession agreement. The facility will be transferred to TNPA after 25 years.
The greenfield terminal will be developed in the port’s West Bank precinct and will include the infrastructure, operational facilities and safety systems required to handle LNG imports.
The expression-of-interest process attracted strong response from prospective operators as the terminal could supply niche LNG consumers and industrial users in the Eastern Cape while diversifying the port’s cargo base, said TNPA in a statement.
East London Port Manager Sphiwe Mthembu said the project represents a significant step towards attracting new private investment to the port.
“The LNG terminal is expected to attract private-sector investment, support the development of strategic energy infrastructure and strengthen the port’s role as a catalyst for economic growth in the region,” he said.
“By creating an enabling environment for new industries and emerging trade opportunities, we are positioning the port to respond to evolving market needs while contributing to regional competitiveness and sustainable development.”
It is part of TNPA’s strategy to expand port infrastructure and support the Eastern Cape’s future energy requirements.
A non-compulsory briefing session will be held on September 29. Proposals close on February 22, 2027.
