Somali pirates continue to widen attacks from the Gulf of Aden into the Indian Ocean. But they made a serious mistake in an attempted hijack off the coast 60-kilometres north of Kenya’s port of Mombasa – with four pirates attempting to board a Kenyan navy vessel in the night. “The naval vessel was on patrol at around 11:00-hrs in the Kilifi area when four suspected Somali pirates on board a speed boat climbed onto the vessel, mistaking it for a merchant vessel,” defence ministry spokesman, Bogita Ongeri, told Reuters. He added that the attack resulted in three being shot dead and one escaping into the sea – but most likely dying from wounds and drowning - with a number fleeing by boat.
