DP World Maputo has made headway on plans to triple the present operating capacity of the container terminal in the port from 150 000 TEUs to 650 000 TEUs by 2020.

Tejas Nataraj, CEO of DP World Maputo,  told delegates at the Transport Forum  in Nelspruit last week  that the terminal had just completed the first phase of the three-phase project, increasing terminal capacity from 150 000 to 350 000 TEUs.

Upgrade plans include doubling the quay length and upping the depth alongside from 12.5 metres to 14.5 metres - able to berth post panamax size container ships.

The terminal has further purchased three ship to shore (STS) cranes and 12 rubber tyre gantries (RTGs) to increase efficiency.

“Reefer capacity will increase from 196 plug points to 700,” said Nataraj, highlighting that there would be 450 plug points by the end of this year.
