The dry bulk carrier Hawk S struck a quay at the Port of Durban on August 31, damaging its hull but causing no reported injuries.
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) confirmed the incident on Thursday, September 3, after videos showing the collision and its aftermath circulated widely on social media.
“Emergency response and operational teams were immediately deployed to the scene and the vessel was relocated to an alternative berth for the necessary inspections to be undertaken,” TNPA said.
The cause of the incident has not yet been established.
“At this stage, there have been no reports of injuries and investigations will commence as soon as possible to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. TNPA is working closely with all relevant regulatory authorities and stakeholders in this regard,” the ports authority said.
“The safety of port users, employees, contractors and port infrastructure remains TNPA’s highest priority.”
Four videos recorded from different angles have been shared on WhatsApp and Facebook.
One night-time video appears to show Hawk S approaching and striking the quay. A second shows water flowing from a damaged section of the hull. Footage apparently recorded during daylight provides a clearer view of the visible damage.
TNPA did not indicate whether the quay was damaged or whether the incident affected port operations.
Automatic identification system information published by VesselFinder shows that Hawk S remained in the Port of Durban at the time of publication. The vessel arrived at the port on August 31 at 18:04.
The 40 576 deadweight tonne Supramax vessel was built in 2025 and sails under the Liberian flag. It has an overall length of 180 metres and a beam of 30 metres.
The South African Maritime Safety Authority has not responded to questions from Freight News regarding the circumstances of the collision and its role in the investigation.
