Royal Dutch Shell will pay Nigerian farmers and fishermen 84 million dollars in compensation for oil spills in 2008, lawyers said on Wednesday.
The 15 600 Niger Delta villagers will receive $3 300 each with $30 million dollars going into a community fund.
London lawyers Leigh Day negotiated a settlement with the Anglo-Dutch oil giant's Nigerian subsidiary, SPDC.
Shell admitted the spills were caused by pipeline failures but said most oil pollution in the Niger Delta was caused by sabotage, illegal refining and attempts at theft.
Lawyer Martyn Day, who represented the people of Bodo in the Ogoniland region, said it was "deeply disappointing" that it had taken six years to reach a deal.
