The acquisition by A P Moller Maersk of Hamburg-based global freight forwarder Senator International underscores the company’s strong focus on airfreight growth.
“Our aim is to become a considerable player in the airfreight industry,” said Torben Bengtsson, global head of air & LCL.
The idea was to offer customers extended global routes and capacity, he said.
“Today, we are a mid-sized global airfreight player, and through our Core Carrier programme we can manage time-critical, oversized, or high-value cargo transportation for our customers,” he added. “Senator operates a significant part of their business through a dedicated air bridge using 19 weekly flights across its network with guaranteed capacity. This focus on own-controlled capacity is highly aligned with Maersk´s airfreight strategy.
“The moves we are making will allow us to offer customers a combination of airfreight integrated with other transport modes.”
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and the transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2022.
