The SA Shippers’ Council has issued a request to the port and rail authorities not to raise penalties and demurrage charges on cargo affected by the current logistics strike. The association has also asked that cargo owners be given a reasonable time period after the strike action to resolve collections and movements of cargo and containers, especially if the strike is a protracted one which will result in huge build-ups of cargo at key points. “The cargo owners are still suffering the effects of the industrial action experienced at SA sea ports late last year where significant costs were incurred,” says Sasc.
