With some 200 fleets
representing almost
10 000 buses and trucks now
certified, the Road Transport
Management System (RTMS)
is continuing to gain traction.
The industry-led selfregulation
scheme that
encourages consignees,
consignors and transport
operators to implement
a vehicle management
system that preserves road
infrastructure and increases
productivity has achieved
significant results in terms of
fuel consumption, according
to Dr Paul Nordengen,
manager of network asset
management systems at the
CSIR.
“Fuel is monitored on a
daily basis and we are running
above industry average,”
he said. “In many fleets
implementation of RTMS
has seen fuel consumption
improved by 20%.
“In addition,
implementation of the RTMS
standards has improved safety,
compliance and efficiency.”
