Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has condemned attempted acts of vandalism and theft of road infrastructure across the province, EWN reports.
This comes after an incident on the R24 on Saturday, where suspects allegedly attempted to steal cable along the route.
The MEC said that such acts not only endangered lives but also posed a serious threat to the safety of road users. Spokesperson Melitha Madiba said the department was continuously addressing issues that compromised the integrity of provincial roads.
Recently, Bernadette Zeiler, CEO of the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that resolving the city’s infrastructure issues was critical.
She stressed that it was important not only for the province but for the country’s economy as a whole, given that the metro contributes approximately 16% of South Africa’s gross domestic product.
