Port of Gothenburg takes strain as lockout continues

The port of Gothenburg.

Inland operations for the Port of Gothenburg container terminal are taking strain from the partial six-week lockout implemented by APM terminals in response to threats of industrial action by the local branch of the Swedish Dockworkers’ Union.

The latest weekly customer news update from Maersk Line notes that the APM terminal is currently running with limited capacity due to the ongoing labour conflict.

“We are facing space pressures on rail caused by fewer departures to/from the port. As for trucking we are unable to guarantee on time delivery of bookings to/from Gothenburg,” the update reads.

The lockout, implemented between May 19 and June 30, has seen a reduction of operating hours and limited services.

Maersk Line and Safmarine told customers last month that they would no longer accept bookings for cargo moving though Gothenburg. The carriers said the booking stop would continue until "we have a clear overview of how the announced lockout will impact our capacity."
