RECORDS ARE there to be broken, and this is what was achieved at the Port of Richards Bay recently when a single coal ship took on a load of 198 035 metric tonnes of coal.
The 206 250 dwt bulk
carrier, Ocean Vanguard, put into the port earlier in the week to begin loading the largest ever consignment of steam coal exported from the Richards Bay Coal Terminal. This achievement broke the previous record of 181 167 MT set in 1993.
The 311 metre long Ocean Vanguard had to receive special dispensation from the Richards Bay port authorities to load to a
sailing draft of 17,679 metres, which is more than the 17,5 m. maximum
usually allowed at the port.
