‘Nationalisation not a viable policy’

Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu told delegates at the African Mining Indaba on Tuesday that South Africa would not nationalise its mines. Quoted by BuaNews, Shabangu said that in the midst of “this debate about nationalisation, we have consistently maintained that nationalisation is not the policy of the ANC or the government of South Africa.” She welcomed the report of the ANC’s Task Team on nationalisation, which reinforced the party’s earlier decisions that “nationalisation is not a viable policy for South Africa”.
