Maritime leaders call for urgent anti-piracy intervention

As the piracy threat in the Gulf of Guinea continues to escalate, international maritime organisations have called for effective maritime law enforcement in both territorial and international waters in the region to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

“This is long overdue, and enforcement by able and willing naval forces is needed urgently to counter the deadly threat to seafarers,” delegates at a roundtable event attended by Bimco, Intercargo, the International Chamber of Shipping, and Intertanko agreed.

While Nigeria has invested in law enforcement capabilities, these are likely to take some time before having a significant effect.

They were unanimous in their agreement to continually review options and to take all necessary action to reduce the Nigerian piracy threat.
