As supply chains across Africa become more complex, logistics providers are under growing pressure to offer integrated and technology-enabled transport solutions, says Grindrod Limited.
The multi-modal service, involved in long-term operational control of Maputo port’s dry bulk terminal, says it has positioned its road transport operations to support this shift, focusing on improving efficiency, safety and coordination across Southern Africa.
Currently, Grindrod operates a fleet of around 800 trucks across eight countries in the region.
The JSE-listed entity says it provides road transport services linking cargo origins with its terminals, intermodal facilities and export gateways, serving sectors including agriculture, mining and project cargo.
But while road freight dynamics dominate hinterland supply chain across the region, it says “safety remains a central consideration in operations, particularly on long-distance and high-volume routes”.
As such, Grindrod has prioritised driver training and compliance processes as part of efforts to reduce risk and improve operational standards across its network.
“Technology has also played an increasing role in the management of road transport activities.
“Grindrod has introduced a customised transport management system designed to improve visibility across the delivery cycle, enable real-time communication and automate financial processes.”
According to the company, these measures have helped streamline invoicing, improve coordination with carriers and strengthen accountability along the supply chain.
The road transport service is also integrated with other parts of Grindrod’s logistics business, including terminal and intermodal operations, agency services, clearing and forwarding, project cargo handling and rail.
“This approach is intended to provide customers with a more coordinated logistics offering as exporters seek greater reliability and predictability in regional and international trade,” the company says.
Its transport operations “are also aimed at supporting export growth while maintaining a focus on responsible operations in the communities where it operates”.
