Limpopo acquires SEZ

Cabinet has approved the Musina-Makhado Vhembe Region of Limpopo as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

“The designated zone will promote industrial development in the region with a specific focus on mineral beneficiation, agro-processing, petro-chemicals, and other light industries,” said Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, who designated the SEZ.

According to Davies, the proposed SEZ is in line with the eighth iteration of the Industrial Policy Action Plan (Ipap) which has identified SEZs as strategic actions designed to boost economic development through greater investment, export volumes and job creation.

The Musina-Makhado region is also part of the Trans-Limpopo Spatial Development Initiative (TLSDI) and is well positioned for regional integration and linkages with Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

“This development will also improve rail and road transport links between South Africa and the rest of the continent,” said Davies.
