Landlocked country launches new railway line to Djibouti

Ethiopia has launched a new rail line which links the capital city of Addis Ababa to the Red Sea state of Djibouti.

This is part of the government’s infrastructure programme aimed at turning the nation into an industrial hub.

Ethiopia's economy is one of the fastest growing in Africa and growth has been fuelled by construction of railways, roads and hydro-electric dams to power industry.

Ethiopian Railways Corporation spokesman Dereje Tefera said in a statement that the $4-billion, Chinese-built 750-km electrified line "will minimise the cost of the transport and the transport time and it's free from pollution; it uses renewable energy”.
