King Shaka Airport achieves massive electricity savings

The King Shaka International Airport in Durban has reported electricity savings of 1.9 GWh over three years, valued at R2.7 million, by implementing an energy management system with the support of the National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa. 



The airport identified energy saving as one of its key business imperatives. To bolster its existing energy saving initiatives, it signed up to the Industrial Energy Efficiency Project (IEE Project) of the National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa (NCPC-SA).



Over three years, three projects were undertaken, resulting in a total energy saving of 1 932 576 kWh, valued at R2 761 249. With a total investment of R40 0641, the estimated average payback period was 1.8 months. A reduction of 1850 tonnes of CO2 was achieved.



The NCPC-SA is a programme of the dti hosted by the CSIR. The services of the NCPC-SA are, at this stage, fully subsidised to enable companies to proactively comply with environmental policy, as well as the regulatory frameworks and standards, before these become legislated.
