A VALUABLE saving in transit time has been made on the Johannesburg-Kampala (Uganda) train run operated by Trans Africa Logistics.
The service - physically run by Spoornet and the Tanzanian rail operators, Trans Africa Rail Corporation (TARC), which also has Spoornet amongst its major shareholders - hauls goods between Johannesburg and Kampala, via the Tanzanian transfer terminal of Kidatu.
According to Trans Africa Logistics director AndrŽ Fourie, continuing familiarisation with the customs' personnel along the route has now cut the previous 21-day transit time to 14-days on the last few fortnightly train services.
The service was originally found physically capable of completing the trip in 11-12 days, but early bureaucratic interference with the service pushed the transit out to the 21-day level.
The promise of an additional train is still in the pipeline, Fourie added. The current train has been running well, and the service has been putting up the train full sign on recent runs.
We expect the additional train to become viable by about September, Fourie told FTW.
