THE NEED to implement a direct customer support mechanism as opposed to regular distribution support has encouraged Stratus
Computer to enter into a venture with DHL Worldwide Express Johannesburg's Express Logistics Centre (ELC).
Stratus now joins existing ELC clients Siemens and Philips, who have been receiving customised logistics solutions from DHL in this country for the past two years. Stratus international logistics manager David O'Toole decided on the move following his company's partnering with DHL abroad two years ago.
When the requirement arose for a similar service in South Africa we went straight to them, he says.
The move fits in with DHL's expansion plans in this country, where Tim Lorenti was moved from DHL Gateways recently to take over ELC's management in Johannesburg. He explains that ELC has concentrated up to this point on fine-tuning its service to a relatively small client base and is now ready to grow.
The centre is an innovative concept, specifically tailored for companies that frequently require parts from their international offices and production centres, such as computers, cellular phones and automotive companies.
Using a state-of-the-art inventory management system, it provides storage facilities for frequently used products, enabling client companies to reduce the volume of stock in warehouses. By collaborating with the international production centres DHL also guarantees 24-hour delivery of less frequently used parts should they be required.
The ELCs also provide expedited transportation and distribution solutions to businesses seeking to launch new products in different countries, test new international markets at a low cost or outsource repair and return services.
The ELC, which resulted from DHL's efforts to secure a service differential within the worldwide courier transport industry, was initiated at DHL Worldwide Express head office in Brussels five years ago, and has proved successful with nine ELCs opening up worldwide during the past five years. The most recent is located at Miami International Airport.
