THERE IS a sense of thrill about sailing vessels of past centuries in everyone connected with the sea, and for that reason alone models of the great vessels of yesteryear find themselves in the offices and homes of every sailor at heart, says Adri Spangenberg.
Superb models of the Cutty Sark and Nelson's Victory form part of the display at The Model Shipyard which she runs at Randburg's Waterfront, settled among every conceivable form of ship's components, from sextants to bells and other collectors' items.
I decided to open what is the only model market of its kind in Gauteng, and I've found the shipping personnel and freight handlers in this region most enthusiastic about it, she says.
Anybody who has ever been thrilled by the beauty and magical allure of sailing ships of days gone by gets excited when he or she comes in here.
The models themselves are hand carved by a group of Cape workers with every intricate detail in place. These are set in sand-cast brass, polished to a high gloss.
