Japan’s largest shipping line, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), has announced a record loss of the equivalent of R26.28 billion for the second quarter, attributed to the line’s write-down of its asset value.
The one-time write down, said the line, reflected the loss of value in shipping assets caused by the ongoing overcapacity in the industry and the impact this was having on freight rates.
