Hapag-Lloyd, DP World expand African port partnership

Hapag-Lloyd and DP World have agreed to expand their partnership across five African ports, the German shipping line announced this week.

The agreement will focus on securing long-term terminal capacity for Hapag-Lloyd in Dakar, Senegal, as well as Luanda, Angola, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Hapag-Lloyd said the partnership will also support the development of port infrastructure at Banana in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Maputo in Mozambique. The company did not disclose details of the planned infrastructure, additional capacity, investment value or implementation timelines.

The shipping line expects its African transport volumes to exceed one million TEUs in 2026.

The expanded cooperation will support its continued growth in Africa and further development of its service network across the continent, Hapag-Lloyd said.

“Africa is one of Hapag-Lloyd’s most important growth markets and we see significant long-term potential across the continent,” said Hapag-Lloyd Chief Executive Rolf Habben Jansen.

“To support this growth, we need reliable infrastructure, sufficient terminal capacity and a network that can scale with our customers.”

He said strengthening the company’s cooperation with DP World will improve the foundation of its service offering in Africa.

According to Hapag-Lloyd, the agreement is part of its broader terminal strategy. The company said it will continue working with a diversified portfolio of terminal operators to secure competitive, reliable and flexible access to port and landside infrastructure.

Hapag-Lloyd also plans to expand its own terminal portfolio through Hanseatic Global Terminals.
