The Grindrod group has built on the Mozambican logistics expertise it has gained while managing and expanding the port of Maputo to extend its logistics chains into the rest of the country. This has seen the group provide logistics support in the ports of Beira, Pemba and Nacala. In Nacala it has invested in the building of intermodal depots and terminals, which include a 61 000-square-metre container facility, with 10 000-square-metres under roof.Dedicated marine and related services operations have been set up to support the oil and gas activities near Palma and the main hub ports of Pemba and Nacala. Over 10 000 tons of cargo have been delivered since the operations started in January 2020 with sub-contracting of landing craft, according to Francois van Rensburg, executive of Grindrod northern Mozambique. In addition to the marine activity, a number of land-side logistics activities have been added to provide an integrated solution. They include a freight control hub and freight consolidation yard in Pemba, the provision of stevedoring and general logistics services in Palma, the positioning of freight consolidation equipment in Palma, and the establishment of a dedicated sailing schedule. Grindrod offers a regular multipurpose liner service serving the ports of Durban, Nacala, Pemba, Afungi and Mombasa. A new 10 000-square-metre logistics centre in Palma will provide a range of services, from transportation of containerised and breakbulk cargoes to handling and storage of full and empty general purpose and refrigerated containers. “These investments demonstrate Grindrod’s focus on future trade corridor initiatives, enabling oil and gas projects in northern Mozambique,” says Van Rensburg.
