Damen Shipyards Group has ordered two additional battery systems for its Combi Freighter (CF) 3850 cargo vessels, expanding the use of technology that can support lower-emission port operations.
EST-Floattech will supply the Octopus Series systems under an existing framework agreement. The latest order will bring the number of its battery systems installed on this vessel type to nine, according to the company.
Designed for short-sea shipping, the CF 3850 can accommodate battery capacities ranging from 240 kWh to 1 320 kWh, depending on operators’ requirements.
Depending on the configuration, the batteries can support bow thrusters during manoeuvring, meet short periods of high electrical demand and enable zero-emission port calls. The announcement does not indicate that the vessels will operate entirely on battery power.
The system offers “the modular flexibility to scale up to meet the specific requirements of our clients”, said Damen Cargo Vessels Procurement Manager Arjan de Vries.
Damen has received orders for 50 vessels in the latest CF 3850 generation over five years.
