First train runs on the Benguela Railroad last week

The first train to ply the Benguela Railroad (CFB), linking the Angolan coast to the country’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, arrived last Thursday in the border town of Luau, according to Angolan press reports.

Running from the city of Lobito, it took about 30 hours to complete the 1 344 kilometre journey.

The original line was begun in 1903 and completed 26 years later. But it was destroyed in 1983 during the civil war in Angola.

It has now been rebuilt by the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), at an estimated cost of over R21 billion.

The line is expected to transport 20 million tonnes of cargo a year.
