IF YOUR containers are being shipped on vessels handled through Saflink, there is a special service available to move the cargo inland on an extra urgent basis.
Under certain circumstances containers manifested for Gauteng can be intercepted at the off-loading point, and road-hauled inland by the shipping line. This service can be called on where urgently-needed cargoes are late, for example, or where special circumstances prevail - such as a need to stagger deliveries in a pre-determined order.
This is not competition for the regular road and rail services. It fills a special need for urgency.
And it is certainly not a cost-saving exercise. It is only done where the importer attaches such a price to urgent delivery that he is prepared to foot the bill for special intervention.
The service only applies to FCL (full container load) cargoes falling under the Saflink ambit, and - if the goods have already been placed on rail - these transport arrangements cannot be altered.
