Eight to appear in court for transporting counterfeit goods

Eight men will appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court today (Monday) for allegedly transporting counterfeit clothing in a heavy haul truck – without the owner’s permission.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson, Clifford Shongwe, told media that the truck owner had sent the truck to Mozambique to deliver a load of soap powder.

The owner became concerned when the truck didn’t arrive at the usual time and contacted the tracking company who located it in Cloverdene, Benoni.

Worried that the truck may have been hijacked, he asked the police to accompany him to the location.  Once there, they found bales of fake clothing and other counterfeit branded gear, including Nike products.

The eight, including the truck driver, were arrested. A search revealed wads of US dollar bills in their pockets.

The goods were taken into police storage and the truck was taken to the police impound as evidence.
