Dream your dreams!

THE EXPLORING human spirit has always wondered what is beyond the horizon, over the hill, or around the bend. We long to see farther and do more, we insist on pushing the boundaries to go where no one has gone before. A generation ago, the Americans collectively responded to John F Kennedy’s challenge to go to the moon; around the same time Nelson Mandela had big dreams for South African society. We look to the skies through the bars of a prison cell or from a privileged position on top of the hill, but the big challenges of today cannot be overcome by pushing the outer boundaries in space or society any more. Contrary to popular belief, we cannot change the world; the only thing we can change is ourselves. When we expand our individual horizons and our set of core values, we create a new world of worth. If we want to overcome poverty, for example, we have to do away with greed. If I feel inspired to write about personal horizons, what is your big dream? What challenges and excites you? Find it, dust it off, honour it and pursue it! Lift your eyes, dream your dreams, and take action - that is what makes life worth living!
