Citrus industry forum to address transport issues

The Citrus Growers’ Association and the Fresh Produce Exporters’ Forum will host the next Citrus Logistics Forum on July 6 in Durban. The theme of the meeting is 'Enabling Sustainable Citrus Transport Services within the Durban Port'. The critical points under discussion will include load placement, cargo securing and damage prevention on long haul road trucks; truck congestion and bottlenecking, direction for the development of the 1-Citrus ITMS; optimisation of citrus reefer haulage in Durban; citrus rail developments, the way forward; and how the citrus industry should respond to DCT’s three-year berth upgrades. The forum is hoping to attract wide participation from the transporters that load citrus regularly to brokers who are involved in citrus transport to Durban. "The problem of trucks loaded with citrus that are delayed in Durban must be resolved or at least managed," said CGA's Mitchell Brook, who has urged transporters and brokers to send a representative to the meeting.
