IT IS a long step from the start of Cindy Reyneke's career in the freight industry as she recently took over the seat of international accounts executive at Emery Worldwide.
In 1991, fresh from her scholarly days, and determined to get a foot in the door of the dynamic shipping industry, her first appointment was in the position of telex operator with Ellerman & Bucknall in Durban.
But a year later, her first step up the ladder was taken - when she moved into sales, and took over a position as customer services operator.
She left E&B and Durban in 1993, and - in her new home in the Golden City of Johannesburg - she took on the title sales rep, for the ships agency side of Grindrod Shipping.
In 1995 she again moved - this time into Rennies Ships Agency, as sales rep for the Combine Ocean division. But, just over a year later, a promotion to sales manager was offered. This she accepted, but soon took a further step upwards on her career path when she made an internal move from Combine Ocean to sales manager for John T Rennie.
This led to the latest move - when she moved across to Emery, and that position
of international accounts executive.
Part of the motivation from this was a desire to spread my wings in the freight industry - and move away from the pure ships agency side of the business, she said.
Now, I have a responsibility for both air and seafreight forwarding - and a more global perspective to my job.
