CALEDONIAN AIRWAYS has launched its first cargo-carrying service from South Africa on its northbound return route to the UK.
The airline, which carried passengers only on its initial service to South Africa during the 1995-96 summer months, did not operate to South Africa last year.
But with licence renewed, it will now operate a regular Friday arrival and departure service in and out of Johannesburg International Airport and to Cape Town on Sundays until end February. The South African service exists only during the European winter months.
The airline's first cargo-carrying aircraft which landed at JIA last Friday was a Boeing 767 leased from Lauda Air, but in future flights will be confined to a DC-10.
Availability of cargo capacity will depend on outgoing passenger loads, which increase towards mid-December but are expected to decrease from mid-January.
Apron Services operate as ramp hauliers to and from the warehouse for the airline with SA Airlink the ground handler in warehouse and documentation handling. Aireps are Caledonian's g.s.a.
