100-ship alliance offers transhipment benefits

A MAJOR new alliance employing over 100 deep-sea container ships will begin operating on east/west routes in the first quarter of the new year.

Hapag Lloyd, Malaysia International Shipping Corporation, NYK Line, OOCL and P&O Nedlloyd make up the strategic grouping serving the Asia/Europe and Asia/North America trades.

The benefits for SA shippers will be increased transhipment opportunities, according to P&ON m.d. John Turner.

Ports in the Far East and South East Asia, for example, which are not served directly, will have more frequent transhipment opportunities.
