Zim to impose sugar duties from next year

Zimbabwe will impose a 10% duty on all imported sugar from January next year to protect the local sugar industry negatively affected by a slump in sales, reported CAJ News, citing the country’s Industry and Commerce Minister, Mike Bimha.

Tongaat Hulett’s Zimbabwe managing director, Sydney Mutsambiwa, said: "We have been advised that the import duty on sugar will be effective in January next year and this is a welcome development to us. Like any other industry we applaud government for its stance in protecting local producers through legislative means.”

Zimbabwe is expected to produce around 500 000 tonnes of sugar this year.
