Temu records meteoric rise, rivalling Amazon – survey

Demand for affordable online orders from China has catapulted Temu to the top of the express parcel industry, the Cross-Border E-Commerce Shopper Survey 2025 has found.

Previously trailing American platform Amazon, Temu has 24% of global market share, the survey shows.

Conducted by the International Post Corporation (IPC) featuring 30 970 shoppers in 37 countries, the survey’s sample size represents about 0.0011% of the estimated 2.77 billion global online shoppers in 2025.

Illinois e-com site Sellers Commerce says that although relatively small, the survey is based on a potentially robust sample for cross-national insights.

To put the IPC’s latest survey results into perspective, in 2022, Temu had only 1% of market share.

Over a three-year period, it represents 2 300% growth.

According to Shopify, such explosive growth far exceeds typical global e-commerce penetration rates, which rose from around 15-16% of total retail in 2022 to about 20.5% in 2025.

Ecommerce News reports that Amazon also recorded a share of 24% in the international survey.

“From this perspective, Amazon and Temu together account for nearly half of all cross-border sales. Incidentally, the order shares say nothing about spending levels on the platforms; it can be assumed that average order values on Temu are significantly lower than on Amazon.”

Country peer platform Shein has remained stagnant at 9% in comparison, whereas Ali Express, also from China, declined from 9% of cross-border transactions to 8%.

Together with Amazon and Temu, Shein remains in the top three e-commerce sites globally.
