Strike at Rotterdam port imminent

Europe’s biggest port, Rotterdam, could come to a standstill over December and January as workers plan to voice their opposition against potential job losses.

Following the proposed implementation of two fully automated container terminals, the FNV Havens union says 700 jobs out of the existing 4 000 could become redundant by 2017.

Dockworkers, container operators Europe Container Terminals (ECT), APM Terminals and Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) began discussing the demands in April; however an agreement has not yet been reached, reported Reuters news agency.
