Nurturing bookworms - eThekwini Metropole’s Eric Apelgren and Shelley Gielink, eThekwini Metro mayor Obed Mlala with P&O Nedlloyd’s Sajala Soogreem and Sam Samlall. Terry Hutson THANKS TO the generous action of P&O Nedlloyd, Durban’s underprivileged children will receive the benefit of 150 000 books. P&O Nedlloyd’s donation to the eThekwini Metropolitan Council (Durban) amounted to a container full of second hand books sent to the metro city by its twinned sister city of Leeds in the UK, with the express wish that they be distributed among underprivileged schools in the eThekwini Metropolitan area. “The timing is great as delivery happened in time for the new school term,” said Barry New, MD of P&O Nedlloyd in South Africa. He said the company was very excited to have taken part in this project as it believed the only way for South African children to develop the culture of reading, which he described as being so vital to the country, was for them to have access to books. “Let’s hope these books create 150 000 new bookworms.”
