Alan Peat IT APPEARS that Gautrans, the transport authority for Gauteng province, intends to impose truck ban pilot schemes on certain highway routes in the province, according to Carol O’Brien, transport policy specialist at the SA Chamber of Business (Sacob). This she told FTW when we queried the latest on the proposed full truck ban on the highway system during peak hours of the day. This was originally the Gautrans idea to combat peak hour traffic congestion, and - although first mooted last year - it was first delayed when it met with fierce resistance from the private sector, then while a Gautrans-sponsored economic impact study was conducted. And, although that impact study was completed some two months ago, no-one outside the provincial authorities has yet seen hair nor hide of the report. “Although it was completed,” said O’Brien, “and we were promised it shortly, that ‘shortly’ never arrives.” She added, while talking about the proposed pilot scheme, that a meeting with the respective MEC has also been requested.
