Anna Cox A SPECIAL advantage for Durban-based TDL Transport is its 7000 sq/m depot in Durban harbour offering many facilities including customs formalities, says managing director Tim Driman. It also has a R21 million bond. Established 22 years ago the company has an edge of vast experience, says Driman. Its 39-vehicle fleet includes specialised equipment for very long and low loads, including 25 rigs which carry up to 42-ton containers, with specially-constructed heavy chassis. The company has become a brand name in the field of handling project cargo, out-of-gauge and abnormal cargo, and cargo which other companies are too scared or unable to transport, says Driman. TDL also operates in many African and sub-Saharan African countries. All vehicles are satellite-tracked on the Vodacom network with international satellite roaming. The company, whose project cargo capability includes factory installations and agricultural projects, employs a specially trained team of 27 drivers. Road transport services are in high demand. The inability of Spoornet to deliver an efficient service, the growing trend by airlines to use road transport on the domestic leg, and South Africa’s burgeoning trade with its neighbours have created new opportunities in the sector.
