Recently reported delays to the opening of the expanded Panama Canal do not seem to be affecting the growing numbers of vessels transiting the waterway.
It recorded a 4.3% increase in cargo throughput in its financial year to the end-September over the same 2014 period, according to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).
This was a record cargo volume totalling 340.8 million tonnes measured on the Panama Canal universal measurement system (PC/UMS).
This was a 2.12% gain on its previous record in fiscal year 2012, when it totalled 333.7 million PC/UMS tonnes.
Containerised cargo was the big player as usual in terms of volumes, followed by dry bulk, liquid bulk and automobiles.
