NEW OWNERS and a large capital injection are expected to lead to expansion of the regional air carrier Inter Air.

To date the airline has flown from Johannesburg to four destinations - Madagascar, Seychelles, Ndola in Zambia and Entebbe in Uganda.

But the new major shareholders, brothers Michael and Rupert Ebeling, who have purchased a 50% shareholding from former chairman Robert Schwartz, have plans to introduce new services to West Africa and the Comores.

With the backing of the R20-million cash boost that the brothers have injected into the carrier, Inter Air is to acquire three Boeing 727 aircraft. The plan is for an October take-off for the new West Africa route, calling at Brazzaville in the Congo, Douala in Cameroon, and Libreville in Gabon.

Whispers of domestic flights on the Johannesburg - Cape Town - Durban triangle have been hushed by new chairman and chief executive Michael Ebeling, with his stated focus on regional flights into the African continent and the Indian Ocean Islands.
