Kenya Airways hopes for direct flights to US by May

Kenya Airways hopes to start direct commercial flights to the US by May after Jomo Kenyatta Airport met most of the requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

It scored 88% when it was assessed by the ICAO last September, and inspectors from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are expected to complete their audit of the airport before the end of March.

A government spokesman also said several other airlines were keen to offer direct flights.

The move is part of Kenya’s desires to boost exports to the US and increase visits by American tourists. Launching flights was part of a package of deals announced during President Barack Obama’s visit to Kenya last July.
