In the fast lane …

Moving three racing vehicles to South
America for the 2017 Dakar Rally
was all in a day’s work for South
African Airways Cargo (SAA Cargo).
As the airfreight partner of the
Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa
Team for the rally – which took place
in January – the airline transported
the racing vehicles to São Paulo,
Brazil en route to Argentina.
The shipment comprised three
vehicles and spares which weighed
around 7 941 kilograms in total.
It took around 16 hours for the
vehicles to reach their destination,
with 11 hours on the aircraft, said
Tleli Makhetha, SAA Cargo general
manager.
He pointed out that the racing
vehicles had been designed in line
with size restrictions for commercial
cargo holds and thus built in such a
way that they could be disassembled
to the size of the pallet and container
to be used.
“It took about three hours to
disassemble each car and six hours
to reassemble,” said Makhetha.
