Drop in coal production may lead to job cuts

Arnot Power Station.

As production at Exxaro’s Arnot Coal Mine has struggled to meet its yearly delivery target of 5 million tons to Eskom’s 100-MW Arnot power station, more than 1 000 miners will lose their jobs when the contract expires in December.

Eskom issued a proposal for new suppliers in August; however, discussions regarding an extension of the contract are still ongoing.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe was quoted by online business news site, Fin24, as saying that “the negotiations are at a very sensitive stage and therefore we are not in a position to provide any further details until this matter has been resolved.”
